About Billy

Hi, I’m Billy Ditchburn, and I’m a Humanist Wedding Officiant, certified by the Ontario Humanist Society, and licenced by the Province of Ontario to perform and solemnize secular marriages in Ontario.  I’m generally based in and around Peterborough, but I’ll happily travel beyond that to perform a service, if so requested. Bus fare may apply.

I called my business Modern Rituals because we humans have always used ritual to mark significant events, both in our own lives and in the life of the planet. Older rituals tend to be religious; Modern Rituals is all about the individual(s) involved.

…if you need to be married in the eyes of one of the capitalized Gods, I’m really not the droid you’re looking for!

As a humanist officiant, my wedding services don’t carry the blessing of any of the major religions. So, if you need to be married in the eyes of one of the capitalized Gods, I’m really not the droid you’re looking for! That doesn’t mean my services can’t be spiritual, though. My belief is that all people are spiritual, even the most hardboiled, dedicated atheists – we just draw our meanings and values from from the world and the people around us.

I recognize that there are circumstances where people of religious convictions need/prefer to avail themselves of a secular wedding service.  In those situations, please be assured that I will work with you, respectfully, to create ceremonies that honour who you are, as human beings.

In addition to weddings, I offer a range of life passage celebrations, from baby namings to celebrations of lives lived, and much more besides.  For more information on these, take a look at my Other Celebrations page. And if you’re curious about what humanists believe, you’ll find that on the About Humanism page.

I’m happy to work with anyone who does not require a religious service, regardless of your ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity or kink.

It really shouldn’t need saying in this day and age, but I’ll say it anyway. I’m happy to work with anyone who does not require a religious service, regardless of your ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity or kink.  Having spent twenty years running a leather fetish business, I hope my eyes are open to the rich veins of diversity that make the human rainbow the wonderful thing that it is!

Last but not least, we Humanist Officiants are governed by the Ontario Humanist Society’s Professional Standards.  If you have concerns relating to our performance, complaints may be directed in writing to: Chair, Ceremonies Committee, Ontario Humanist Society, 265 Gore Street, Almonte ON K0A 1A0 or, by email, to ethicalconcerns@ontariohumanists.ca
